The name Larimar has an equally beautiful connection to the Caribbean. Dominican gemstone pioneer Miguel Méndez combined "Larissa," the name of his daughter, with "mar," the Spanish word for sea.
The name couldn't be more fitting for a gemstone whose colors recall the Caribbean waters surrounding its homeland.
From Mountain to Jewelry
Larimar is not found in a large, easily accessible open pit. The deposits occur within the rugged terrain of the Bahoruco mountains, where the stone is found in irregular pockets within altered volcanic rock.
Mining Larimar can be physically demanding. Miners must follow the natural occurrence of the stone through the mountains, carefully extracting material from the surrounding rock.
The journey from a rough piece of Larimar to a finished gemstone requires additional work as well. Once extracted, the material is cut, shaped, polished, and carefully selected for use in jewelry.
